Should Players be allowed to gamble/bet in sport ?

It is amazing; gambling in sport is suddenly the hottest topic doing the rounds of the media.  I do not have a problem with people gambling, but I wish sports stars would not gamble on their own particular sport.  The current crop of AFL players have really made a bad choice, I am sure we all have in our lives, but to be so foolish as to gamble on a sport that they are directly involved in is nothing short of criminal.

Jockey Chris Munce is now facing jail in Hong Kong due to another foolish decision.  I respect that sports people now have a lot of money and a lot of spare time on their hands, but I want to know, what are the managers of these people doing?  Surely a manager can take a vested interest in a sports star and show them some guidance, as to what a good choice is and what a bad choice is.

Gambling has gone on for years, and is available in a variety of levels, with casinos, TAB's and poker machines surely there is enough options available for those that really need to gamble to actually gamble in a sport or field that is a long way removed from what they are actually involved in.

I do recognise that there are those in the world with addictions to gambling and I am also aware of the problems associated with gambling, but I respect a person’s choice to gamble responsibly.  As long as everyone is aware of the help available for problem gamblers I am happy.
